Miss America vs. The President

I know, many of you are probably very confused with the title of my blog. And why shouldn't you be? Why would one ever compare the Miss America pageant with voting for the President of the United States? At first glance, they seem completely different. And to be honest, they are extremely different for all the obvious reasons. However, when you look further into it, they really are very similar. Let me explain...

To bring up the obvious, they both consist of voting. And, correct me if I'm wrong (I've never actually watched a Miss America pageant... I only really know what I've seen on movies, etc), but for both of these, it isn't even the general public that vote for either. For Miss America (Once again, correct me if I'm wrong...) there is a panel of judges that makes the final decision for who gets to wear the crown. The same goes for the President of the U.S. - It even has the sense of a "panel of judges" that gets to decide who the President gets to be, also known as Congress. And this method of voting almost make sense. Both the panel and Congress are "trained" and "schooled", and supposedly full of the knowledge to make a calculated decision on who could hold the title of Miss America or The President.

Going along with my last point, those said "judges" (we will use the term judges as an umbrella term to encompass both the panel of judges and Congress) do have knowledge and experience in their given fields, but do they always go with what they know, deep down inside, is right? I'm sure both parties receive bribes along with biases, depending on who is or isn't running for the given title. Some may not like the candidate, and therefore will vote for another, based purely on that principle. Others will only vote for that person, because they share similar beliefs, which makes sense, but those judges also need to look into the competency of said candidates regardless of what they display as their point of view - That candidate may not actually be the right choice after all (as we have seen in the past... And perhaps the present as well).

Now, I'm going to change the focus of my writing a bit more towards the differences of the two. The main difference I would like to discuss is the fact that Miss America starts out with hundreds of contestants in their version of the primaries. Then, it gets eliminated down to 50 - One contestant from each state. This brings a lot of diversity to the table and enables the judges to have a wider range to pick from, and broadens the chances for picking the right contestant who will perform her duties the best.

On to the whole reason for writing this blog. I read this today: "Why do Americans choose from just two people to run for president and 50 for Miss America?" It really got me thinking. I understand that America seemingly doesn't have as many competent people to hold that office, but on the contrary! There are millions of people living in the United States, and there are so many who could handle the job brilliantly. I think there needs to be some changes made in how we elect a President, so that we can encompass more people to run for Office, and that way, we have a better chance to get the right person for the job.

We also need to do something about the voting system. I understand that when this country was first starting, we didn't have the proper technology to get everyone's votes to vote for president, hence we created the electoral college to represent the public. However, in this day, we do have "advanced" technology so that every one can vote. And I know what some of you are thinking, "Should we really allow everyone to vote?" Obviously not everyone pays attention and acquires the knowledge to make an educated decision, but maybe something in that regard needs to change as well. Instead of having basically the only voting requirement of being 18 years of age and older, there should be some kind of test that you need to pass in order to get the voting privilege. Obviously that would be a lot of work, but seeing where this country is headed right now, and the fact that we don't get another president for two more years (give or take), I think it would be a good idea. And if not that, then we need to come up with another solution, because the system we have just isn't working for us as well as it was when this country came into existence.
